The author claims that early 1960s, Kenya was doing better than Singapore, the latter was full of slums, mosquito and rat infested shanty towns, where everyone spits everywhere. Now Singapore is one of the most developed nations less than 50 years or 2 generations.

Singapore is a good stepping stone for Burmese ...........The compensation (even in post tax absolute terms), opportunities (job and quality of higher education) and quality of life (food, housing, communication, transportation, leisure) is better than half of the Western European nations.
-Anonymous

I do not mean that those in Singapore should not seek opportunities elsewhere.
But make sure you get most out of it from Lion city. There you can get good education (public universities and polytechnics in Singapore are better choice than third tier Universities in UK), for example, if one cannot afford the UK education straight away, use Singapore as stepping stone. Earn a good MSc in Singapore and go for UK for best graduate school there. Or study in Singapore Polytechnics and go for B.Eng or M.Eng (3 or 4 years undergraduate degree) studies at UK universities. Or get a Bachelor in Singapore, work and save money for MBA in UK, etc.. or try to win a PhD there. If you have already earned a PhD in Singapore go to UK, Canada, Europe or US for post doctorate opportunities. I am not asking to be a tin can collector who earned MSc in Yangon, then went for MSc in Singapore and MSc in elsewhere again. I think 2 public universities in Singapore are as good as top 20 UK universities or top 100 US universities or top 5 Ausi universities.

Europe
In the Netherlands, a fresh grad MSc (or first year PhD pay at top engineering universities) make about 1800 Euros while 4th year PhD makes about 2200 Euros. A fresh grad MSc in top Dutch electronics giant makes about 2200 to 2400 Euros a month, the rent is about 700 to 800 Euros a month. And you can calculate its saving potential is almost like Singapore. In Germany, the same is true and there are not so many jobs. In France, its youth are working overseas as hard to get permanent jobs.

Elsewhere in Europe, for example in Spain, Italy (southern parts), Portugal, Greek and everywhere in Eastern Europe, pay is less than Singapore (in absolute terms, even before tax). I hope you get a picture by now.

UK
In UK, a fresh graduate with second class honors (in Engineering, Maths and Physics) from top 5 universities got offers of pay arounud 24,000 Pounds a year. There are more than 300 universities in UK. Graduates from other majors, Graduates (with third class honors, without honors) in Engineering, Graduates from lesser universities start with less than that amount. Some MSc holders started jobs in UK with pay less than 20,000 a year. There are some Burmese who makes around 50,000 Pounds a year with experienced engineer, senior engineer, or managerial jobs but starting pay are somewhere around less than 25000 even if you earned a first class honors from top universities.

The tax rate is above 20%. So best case scenario, the take home pay is around 18,000 to 20,000 Pounds which is about 50,000 to 60,000 Singapore Dollars. That translated to 4000 to 5000 Singapore dollars a month. Considering the fact that living expenses in UK are twice of that in Singapore: a Starbuck latte costs twice, cab fares cost three times, tube (London underground) cost three times, bus fares the same, and rental fees about the twice, newspapers cost twice or more and so making 5,000 Singapore Dollars in UK is same as making 2500 in Singapore. And it is hard to get a job in UK without experience, a Singaporean friend of mine with PhD in Computer Science (followed a good honors degree from good UK univ) started career as a contractor (contract based engineer)
as it is hard to get employee job (easier to get in Singapore). A post doctoral research fellow in UK universities makes less than 20,000 Pounds and there who are complaining about Singapore should travel to UK, Europe and Australia first and live there for weeks and listen to immigrant experience there. Grass is greener somewhere but Singapore is a good starting place.

NZ is not very nice as I met more than NZ PR working in Singapore who studied in NZ graduate schools and came to work in Singapore while paying mortgage in Auckland.

One of the great things about Aus is that, here in Australia, the government pays a lot of contribution towards your tuition fees when you're a PR or a citizen. Not only that, you also get Austudy (a living expense contribution) of up to 800AUD /month.

I'm currently studying medicine here, and 80% of tuition fees are being paid by the government. One of my friends, who's studying med in US has to pay all her tuition fees by herself, even though she's a green card holder.

In US, med tuition fees are around USD 200,000 for the 4 years MD. In Aus, med tuition fees are around AUD 170,000 for the 4 years MBBS, for which gov pays ~80% (AUD 135,000). If you think about it like that, AUD 135K is almost half of a house value. This is excluding the living expense contribution.

In Aus, we have undergrad entry med (admission is based on your year 12 & UMAT scores & interview) and graduate entry med (admission is based on undergrad degree GPA, GAMSAT scores & interview). Among the number of places available, graduate entry stream makes up about 60% and it's going to increase (I think the Aus medical education sys will also transform into US like system in the future). Undergrad entry MBBS is 6-7 years in duration and grad entry is 4 years. We also need to do 1 year intern, 2 years residency and an exam before we can register to be a GP.

So yes, it takes about 13 years (after year 12) to be a fully registered GP. [4 years undergrad + atleast 2 years in admission process for GAMSAT exam, interview, etc + 4 years med school + 1 year intern + 2 years residency/registeration]

US
In the United States, fresh graduate with BSEE or BSME (Bachelor of Science in Mech Engineering) will happily work for 50,000 USD a year pay. The minimum H1 pay is above 60000$ (correct me if I were wrong) but not all H1 make that money as rumored by others.

With experience and skills, one may make six figures salaries, but with federal tax and state tax combined will be around 30 to 40%. At the end of the day, a person making 5000 SGD a month in Singapore may be able to save as much as a person making 5000 USD a month in US. And if you are an American citizen, if you make more than 80K a year, you will have to pay tax to US government even if you are living outside of US. That made some US expatriates to convert citizenship.
-Anonymous

Canada
In Canada, I heard the tax rate is about 50% and I am not keen to pay
such rates even if it is an excellent welfare state. And I will not move to Canada as it is kind of backyard for US and eventually you will have to head south to US.

Philipine has a democracy but overseas Philipinos or Pinoys stands around 5 Millions (before you counting the second or third generation Philipinos in US).

So is India, it is democratic (yes some states are ruled by prime ministers merely with grade 10 education and half of its congress men or MPs have criminal records).

I prefer Singapore PAP style democracy than Indian or Philipinos democracies.
A democracy is just a governance system, a framework, bounds in which people can make their living. It is not a silver bullet. Change the government today, if 50 millions people still do not know why responsible citizens have to pay tax when they are dreaming about rights. They talk about subsidized education in western nations while they do not know the tax rates are 50% even for middle income professionals. They do not know who are players in world politics and they do not learn history. I have no respects for current opposition while I dont like the current government. People like Andy are doing good job. He is enlightening the average Ko Ba, Daw Mya to become less naive (if they can access this blog). Good work Andy!!!

That is pure fantasy and trying desperately to fool the poor, it may be politically correct but being poor will do more harm than being rich.

Politicians, leaders and officials with ဆုိက္ကားသမား caliber screwed up nations (US, UK and Burma) and will screw up the earth. If a person who was born less fortunate can always rise up the social ladder in one way or another and there is no way a trishaw master can be wiser than a professor. He can be more cunning and manipulative, stress smart and sly but all those traits are undesirable. I worship intelligence, education and hardwork and I dont shy bashing meat heads and ဆုိက္ကားသမား caliber people are baggage in any nation. When people buy pets, they want the best ones because a shitty street dog and a nice doggy are different -one is more desirable than another- so are the people, they are different. Liberals may say people are the same, but let's face the truth, some are above others. Let's us not fool ourselves. Just work hard to rise up higher.

I quoted from the following book about the meritocracy, some may call elitism.

Hi Anonymous @ 11/22/08 9:40 AM / 9:59AM...

i don't noe wat else to say.. u r damn rite.. i wish everybody could see the reality.. instead of believing in utopia...

The notion that a trishaw driver has a better understanding of world view than a university professor is based on some useless socialist ideas.. In socialism they need to believe that everybody is equal.. or proletariats are in better position to lead than the rich and the educated. And just like the animal farm, when the realism will sooner or later strike them.

But we can’t be blamed.. we all r educated in socialist system. But once we know our idea r out of line with the essence of democracy and capitalism, we need to change them.

Anyway, thanks Andy for bring up the topic.

To Anonymous,

Sadly, your way of thinking is exactly the same as Aung Bu’s, Shwe Mi’s , swan-arr-shin’s and kyant-phont’s as they only think of the dish on their table regardless of what kind of government is ruling them.

Anonymous - 11/25/08, 6:04 AM

Well, my dish in front of me is earned by me and I did not rob, steal or sucked or begged from anyone. It is as clean and as white as Xmas snow. What do you say!!!

To anonymous,

Ha Ha….Not much to say but one question.

Is there any reason (or fear) that you don’t want to(dare to) come back to Singapore from Norway? Singapore (according to your arguments) is such a best place in the world.
You may not want to answer this question and you can say that it is too personal. ( Everybody will think the same way for sure ).
But you know..let's say..i know your reason in some way, you can definitely imagine the extent of how much I pity you.
Or you may answer the other reason(s) which is not the real hidden reason.Don't worry! You are still *safe* as long as you are under the cover of " Anonymous ".
